چکیده

Helios Sanchis-Alepuz Institut für Physik, Karl-Franzens-Universität Graz, Austria (Received 20 December 2010; published 19 May 2011) We study the Hamiltonian formulation of fðRÞ theories of gravity both in metric and in Palatini formalism using their classical equivalence with Brans-Dicke theories with a nontrivial potential. The Palatini case, which corresponds to the ! 1⁄4 3=2 Brans-Dicke theory, requires special attention because of new constraints associated with the scalar field, which is nondynamical. We derive, compare, and discuss the constraints and evolution equations for the ! 1⁄4 3=2 and ! 3=2 cases. Based on the properties of the constraint and evolution equations, we find that, contrary to certain claims in the literature, the Cauchy problem for the ! 1⁄4 3=2 case is well formulated and there is no reason to believe that it is not well posed in general.

Extension of the EGS theorem to metric and Palatini f(R) gravity

By using the equivalence between metric and Palatini f(R) (or “modified”) gravities with ω = 0,−3/2 Brans-Dicke theories, it is shown that the EhlersGeren-Sachs theorem of general relativity is extended to modified gravity. In the case of metric f(R) gravity studied before, this agrees with previous literature.

Palatini Variational Principle for N - Dimensional Dilaton Gravity

We consider a Palatini variation on a general N -Dimensional second order, torsionfree dilaton gravity action and determine the resulting equations of motion. Consistency is checked by considering the restraint imposed due to invariance of the matter action under simple coordinate transformations, and the special case of N = 2 is examined. We also examine a sub-class of theories whereby a Palat...

Exact hypersurface-homogeneous solutions in cosmology and astrophysics.

A framework is introduced which explains the existence and similarities of most exact solutions of the Einstein equations with a wide range of sources for the class of hypersurface-homogeneous spacetimes which admit a Hamiltonian formulation. This class includes the spatially homogeneous cosmological models and the astrophysically interesting static spherically symmetric models as well as the s...

Rri{96{14; Gr-qc/9606020 Black Hole Area in Brans-dicke Theory

We have shown that the dynamics of the scalar eld (x) = \G ?1 (x)" in Brans-Dicke theories of gravity makes the surface area of the black hole horizon oscillatory during its dynamical evolution. It explicitly explains why the area theorem does not hold in Brans-Dicke theory. However, we show that there exists a certain non-decreasing quantity deened on the event horizon which is proportional to...

Gauge-invariant Cosmological Perturbations in Generalized Einstein Theories

Using the covariant approach and conformal transformations, we present a gauge-invariant formalism for cosmological perturbations in generalized Einstein theories (GETs), including the Brans-Dicke theory, theories with a non-minimally coupled scalar field and certain curvature-squared theories. We find an enhancement in the growth rate of density perturbations in the Brans-Dicke theory, and dis...
